Southeast of town lies Mt. Zao, a busy ski resort in wintertime. But in spring, the hiking trails open up to reveal an amazing green lake situated in the crater of a previous volcanic eruption. Zao last erupted 120 years or so ago, and I'm glad it didn't choose the day of our visit to pull that stunt again.
